As the federal government pursues efforts to dismantle equity efforts made to counter longstanding structural discrimination within the systems of our country, I am very sure clients will continue to process the negative impact of bias and discrimination on their mental and physical health.
As a clinical social worker, trained as both a federal HRSA scholar and African-Centered Social Work scholar, I know that public policies impact people in their private lives. People invite me everyday to witness the impact of discrimination on their health.
We know that policy impacts cultural shifts, and again - those cultural shifts impact people's lives in real time.
Banning diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts that aim to increase justice and quality of life is going to cause harm and reverse progress. If anything, we needed greater alignment between theory and implementation of existing efforts.
This week, I’ll be attending “The Future of DEI” virtual event with Erin Corine Hola Magnolia. The event includes a multicultural panel of guests: Lucie Le Naour, Dr. Ada Martin, and Christian Ortiz who are all equity leaders in their own fields related to identity and belonging in the U.S. and Europe.
