Counter-transference is the phenomenon of clinicians making their client’s experiences about them. Sometimes, we become stuck when responding to a client transference. Other times, there is no transference occurring and we still find ourselves making client experiences about us. What’s the professional thing to do? What’s the human thing to do? And how are these things influenced by the social identities held by client and therapist. We’ll explore this.

Many clinicians struggle with how to frame themes of race, culture, gender, sexuality etc as clinical concern. Some of these themes in our field have been treated pathologically in order to meet criteria for clinical concern and medical necessity. In attempts to decolonize our therapeutic work, many of us are trying to take a very different approach while still existing within the confines of billing, insurance, and the medical industrial complex. We need spaces to discuss the ethical concerns involved from a social justice and NASW Code of Ethics perspective.

Participants should expect this to be a space where they cannot only name their pain points, but also celebrate wins as they help a particular client have a courageous conversation with their partners, friendships, colleagues, families, bosses etc around themes of interracial and intercultural power dynamics. Because interracial and intercultural therapeutic work is heart work and carries a unique emotional labor, some sessions will begin and end with shared grounding.
We offer seasonal group consultation services to meet the needs of clinicians who are passionate about bringing racial justice and cultural inclusion into the therapy room. All sessions are virtual.
